MIND – Part Two
‘Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve’
Napoleon Hill, Think and Grow Rich.
Before I dig too deep into the article, I think it’s important to ask “What is a Growth Mindset” and how does it relate to your health & fitness?
As humans, we’re all genetically alike. In fact, 99.9% of humans are identical in their genetic make-up!
It’s in our mindsets conditioning, composed on a personal journey that set its roots in an early childhood stage, where our seeds were sown to enable us to grow into something truly unique.
As these seeds grow and sprout, we either adopt a Fixed Mindset or a Growth Mindset.
As your seed grew, you developed a personality trait that was influenced by a set of beliefs which were passed onto you via the stimulus that served to confront you and, forge the way you view the world.
Self Expression and the Reflection of Your Mindset
Whether you consider yourself to have a positive mindset or negative mindset, it’s merely a cultivation that is shaped by your overall attitude. In turn, your attitudes creation is simply a reflection of your lifetime’s worth of experiences.
Background and culture, family and social up-bringing were all factors that influenced the character you portray today via self expression.
Essentially, we’re all a product of the environment that we most commonly occupy. That is to say, if you were raised among energetic surroundings, the chances are that you’d grow into an energetic personality as a result of your environment.
The Current State of Mind within a Fixed Mindset
‘Excuses won’t burn any calories’
Mindset can also be viewed as your current state of mind that basically translates into how your life is currently being lived. With that in mind, your current state can either be fixed or, it can also be dynamic to the point where your mindset can be altered based on your own beliefs.
This concept of a Fixed Mindset vs a Growth Mindset isn’t something which is noticeable in everybody’s lives. This may come down to a lack of self-awareness or a deficiency in mindfulness.
As an example; a fixed mindset might be concealed by a positive demeanour; however, it’s often bolstered by a pessimistic undertone without the individual being aware of his or her mask..
Some people choose to simply accept their lot in life with the belief that they could never reach a healthy weight. They may even go as far to suggest that attending the gym would simply be a waste of time because they think it’s too hard and don’t have the time etc etc!
They’re in a fixed state of mind and use excuses like time to mask deeper feelings of a fear of failure.
The Growth Mindset and the Subconscious
‘Find comfort among the chaos to unlock the opportunity for growth’
Your mindset is expressed on two different levels; consciously and subconsciously. The conscious level is where you feel like you’re making your decisions; however, it’s on the subconscious level where the determinations are actually being made.
The subconscious is a very powerful level acts to protect the fixed mindset from being hurt and masks these feelings of fear with convenient excuses; the mind never truly exits from this comfort zone and never gets to experience personal growth to its fullest potential.
The dynamic mindset realizes this and, can rationalize these feelings. As a result, the dynamic mindset can place these fears into perspective and unlock the power of the subconscious in order to determine a more desirable outcome for itself.
Because of this, the dynamic mindset also places itself in the fortuitous position of being outside of its own comfort zone and into an environment of abundant with stimulus and growth.
A Growth Mindset is the Key to a Healthy Life
The key to unlocking the power of a healthy mind and a growth mindset comes from introspect and raising a conscious level of self awareness that is responsive to what’s going on beneath the surface.
Self awareness is critical shift in attitude that enables an understanding that a fixed mindset can be re-established as dynamic. This acknowledgement of a subconscious thought by a productive thought pattern is a pivotal step that can determine the difference between the success and failure on any given journey.
The next critical step is, your own personal development that’s driven by a positive mindset.
Whether you’ve been leading a mostly active or sedentary lifestyle, chances are that you or someone you know has experienced an exercise-related injury.
It’s safe to say that most gym-goers have encountered the dreaded feeling of gym intimidation at some point in their life. For some people, overcoming anxiety about the gym may be harder than the workout itself!
